What makes SmartyPants different from all the other vitamins?

SmartyPants was the first to combine four vitamins in one. With a full multivitamin, eco-friendly Omega 3s (DHA and EPA), over 100% of your daily Vitamin D3, and an amount of B12 equivalent to a standalone supplement, we focused on those nutrients toughest to get from food. They all come together to produce a delicious gummy treat that is easy to take and you know you can trust. We use only the best and most well researched nutrients which we then test every batch using a 3rd party tested to make sure that what it says on the bottle is inside the gummy.

Our formula actually saves you money — if you bought the same quality individual components separately you would easily spend more than twice what we charge per bottle.  This is why we created SmartyPants in the first place: to make it easier for more of us to be healthy every day.

Are SmartyPants gluten-free? wheat free? dairy free?

Yes, we are free of gluten, wheat and dairy.  All of our products contain no yeast, wheat, milk, eggs, gluten, salt, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, artificial colors, artificial flavors, salicylates, or preservatives.

Are SmartyPants soy free?

We are free of Soy Allergens. Because we chose to use a Natural form of Vitamin E as opposed to synthetic, our Natural E is from soy distillates. It is not required to be labeled as an allergen as it is highly refined and does not contain allergenic proteins. But as we think we should always err on the side of safety, we do not list soy on our “free of” on our label. I would share this information with your healthcare professional.

Do adults need to take 6 gummies per day and Children 4? And what if I want to take more than the recommended dosage?

Our suggested serving size for grownups (6) or for kids (4) provides 100% or more of the recommended daily intake of 9 or more essential vitamins and minerals, along with best-in-class Omega 3 oils, that are meant to help balance and enhance your already healthy diet.  Some research suggests that you might benefit from increased doses of both Vitamin D and Omega 3s, and if you wish to supplement beyond our product’s nutrient levels you should do so under the guidance of a doctor or healthcare professional.  We do not advise children to take more than 4 gummies a day, or adults to take more than 6 gummies a day — to ensure the oil-based vitamins in our product remain well below possible toxicity thresholds.

This recommended dose seems high — why?

Our goal was to create an All-in-One gummy that would not only provide a full multivitamin + Vitamin D + Fish Oil + B12, but have you and your kids asking to take their vitamins.

As an all-in-one we are 4 separate servings hence the high number of gummies. The real trick is the Fish Oil. DHA/EPA is a large molecule and needs room!  We wanted to provide an excellent source not just a trace so we could put it on our label. Its why if you took a Vitamin D, a multi, a B12, and Fish Oil separately you would likely be taking more than 6 a day (if you were taking them at the same nutrient levels). You are also saving money! To get all those things would cost buying each one separately (usually around 10 dollars each for the Multi and D and 20 dollars for Fish Oil.

Are SmartyPants safe?

We make safety a priority – that’s why we test every batch we make for purity. We do not use any artificial dyes or flavors or artificial sweeteners. We ONLY use NATURAL colors and flavors from natural sources.  For sweeteners, we use organic cane sugar and organic tapioca as well as chicory root inulin in our fiber products. Omega 3 DHA, and EPA are sourced from sustainable small fish sources so they’re eco-friendly and don’t have the same heavy metal, mercury or PCB’s that larger fish sources (such as salmon and tuna) often have.  Additionally, as iron is the leading cause of supplemental overdose, we chose not to include it in our product. We didn’t feel good about providing a product that tasted great and yet could be harmful if someone decided to eat a whole bottle in one sitting (be they kids or adults).

Can I give this product to my child if he/she is under three years of age?

Most physicians agree that the choking hazard for kids exists until 3 years of age, so we recommend checking with your pediatrician to see if SmartyPants is right for them. Some parents cut up SmartyPants into smaller sizes for children younger than three years old.

What kind of gelatin do you use?

Our product currently contains porcine gelatin. As we are produced in an allergen free environment we can’t use either beef (mad cow) or fish proteins to encapsulate. Currently, there is no technology to encapsulate fish oil in fruit pectin and without encapsulation they would be inedible. We will be producing a vegetarian and Kosher version of our product soon. If you would like to be added to our mailing list to hear about these new products first, please email us at customerservice@smartypantscorp.com.

Do you ship internationally?

If you are outside the U.S., please check out iherb.com, VitaminLife.comAheersHealth.com, or VitaminShoppe.com where they ship internationally wherever you are!

How should I store my SmartyPants?

It is best to store SmartyPants away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat. Store in a cool, dry place at room temperatures up to 75° F (25° C). We recommend refrigerating SmartyPants above this temperature. At temperatures 90° F and above SmartyPants will begin to get soft, and at 120° SmartyPants will begin to melt. If caught staring at the Ark of the Covenant, you will melt. And if contacted by water, a wicked witch will melt — all important to keep in mind when storing SmartyPants.

For added protection, we use special bright, white bottles which (unlike clear bottles) repel heat and light – the arch enemies of gummies. Our bottles ensure a tenuous truce between these ancient rivals.

Where should I NOT store my gummies?

Smartypants is sensitive to heat at temperatures approaching 90° F. At this temperature, the gummies will begin to get soft, and at 120° F they will begin to melt.

Avoid storing your gummies in places like:

  1. In your car for long periods of time
  2. Near a furnace or heater
  3. on a windowsill which gets direct sunlight
  4. On top of a refrigerator
  5. inside an oven or microwave
  6. on or adjacent to the planet Mercury

SmartyPants Weight Management

Why did you create a Weight Management product?

While we love our SmartyPants Original formula, we know that one size doesn’t fit all and that many of us do what we can to maintain a healthy weight. We know that sugar is a concern for some people so a product with less sugar made sense. We also know that people are becoming increasingly deficient in fiber.  Adding no additional sugar and including an excellent source of soluble fiber was a great way for us to provide a weight control supplement.  But unlike competing weight management products, SmartyPants Weight Management also includes our premium, unique All-in-One formula, with Omega 3s, 225% of the RDI of Vitamin D3, 91 mcg of B12, and a full Multivitamin all in one delicious serving!

I am not overweight but am interested in reducing my sugar intake. Will this product work for me?

Yes — this is not a weight loss product. While organic cane sugar remains a great carrier of nutrients, we know that, for some, sugar is enough of an issue, and we completely understand a desire to reduce sugar intake and add a reliable source of soluble fiber in busy lives.

Can I take it for weight loss?

Smartypants is not for weight loss. While the product contains only 3g of sugar per serving and the soluble fiber contained in our Weight Management product will help you with feelings of fullness and satiety, we do not make any claims about this products ability to help you lose weight.

Does it contain caffeine or any artificial stimulants?

No. A lot of weight management products out there contain caffeine, which is used to artificially accelerate your metabolism, suppress your appetite, and increase water loss. However, there are no sound long-term studies proving the effects of caffeine actually impact weight loss or weight control.  Not only are caffeine’s claims upon weight control unproven, but caffeine, in high enough amounts, has been shown to potentially cause jitters, anxiety, spikes in blood pressure, a rapid heartbeat, and actually increase appetite and cravings. For our Weight Management product, we wanted only the highest quality ingredients that have undergone rigorous, peer-reviewed study.  We also refuse to use any artificial ingredients in our products, including artificial stimulants. Instead of masking hunger with caffeine, the soluble fiber contained in SmartyPants Weight Management provides you with real fullness. It is a natural way to control weight without any of the side effects that come from stimulants. It will allow for a more sustained release of energy versus the up and crash of caffeine.

I already take SmartyPants. Would I replace it with Weight Management?

SmartyPants Premium Weight Management consists of not only a fiber supplement with no added sugar but also an All-in-One vitamin with Vitamin D3, EPA and DHA Fish Oil and a full multivitamin. If you take our Weight Management product, there would be no need to take SmartyPants Original gummies.  It would act as a complete substitute for your SmartyPants original, as you will still be getting all the same nutrients, plus fiber!

Why does fiber help with weight management?

Soluble fiber dissolves in water in the digestive tract and transforms into a gel during digestion.  This gel expands in your system, giving you the experience of feeling full on less food.  Soluble fiber moves through the gut slowly and lowers total cholesterol and the bad cholesterol (LDL) without affecting the good cholesterol (HDL).   It also may help stabilize blood sugar by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates into the blood.

Why is a high level of B-12 important for weight management?

Vitamin B-12 is a water-soluble vitamin and is required for proper red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis.  B-12 also helps us process the foods we eat and turn them into energy to power our metabolism.  A powered metabolism helps our bodies burn the food we consume rather than storing it as fat.  B-12 deficiency can lead to sluggishness, an overall lack of energy, and poor mood.  Thus, getting enough B-12 is critical for energy levels.

Can my child take the weight management product?

Typically, anyone over the age of 16 can take our Adult products. Lower sugar and soluble fiber are certainly areas of concern for many parents, and that’s why we created our Kids Fiber Complete gummies, which provide all the ingredients (and benefits) of our Weight Management gummies in a dose appropriate for kids.  But we always recommend checking with your healthcare practitioner for what might be right for your child.

Why is SmartyPants for Weight Management more expensive than your other products?

Typically, weight management products cost ANYWHERE FROM 40-60 dollars. Even though we are priced to compete with these products, our Weight Management gummies contain far more than these competing products.  Not only do our gummies contain a high quality soluble fiber supplement, but also a full Omega 3 supplement, a Vitamin D supplement with 225% of the Recommended Daily Intake for Vitamin D3, a full B-12  supplement, and a complete Multivitamin – with none of the artificial sweeteners our competitors use. SmartyPants Weight Management costs you the same as other weight management products, but also provides you with several other supplements that would cost you an additional 20-30 dollars!  We want taking your vitamins to be simple, affordable and enjoyable!

Ingredients

How are SmartyPants made?

SmartyPants sources our best-in-class nutrients and top-of-the line Fish Oil from leading nutritional manufacturers who are USP and GMP certified.  SmartyPants are made in California according to Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP) safety standards. We do not cut corners in sourcing or manufacturing our products because we designed our product for our own children and we want them to have only the best ingredients available on the market.

Where do your ingredients come from?

Our ingredients are sourced from leading nutritional companies throughout the United States and Canada, who are USP and GMP verified.  Our source materials are quality checked rigorously to ensure the quantities of nutrients on our labels can be found in every SmartyPants gummy we sell, and we always guarantee our Fish Oil is third-party laboratory tested.

Does SmartyPants contain any MSG?

SmartyPants does not contain MSG in any form. Our natural flavors are lemon, orange and strawberry banana.

Our Fish Oil

Where do you source your Fish Oil from and is it free of contaminants?

Our MEG-3® Fish Oil is sourced from wild-caught, sustainable fisheries in Peru. The Peruvian upwelling region, where the cold Antarctic waters meet the steep continental shelf off the west coast of South America, is one of the richest marine environments in the world. The fishery is bio-diverse, environmentally responsible, and entirely sustainable. Our fish oil from the start undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it meets the highest quality standards. Then, it undergoes a series of processes, including molecular distillation, designed to result in ultra-pure, high quality fish oil, while taking great care to minimize the potential for oxidative damage. Our Fish Oil is manufactured at a USP certified lab using a sealed vacuum filtration process and is verified by third-party laboratory testing for purity and efficacy to be compliant with California’s Proposition 65, which guarantees our product meets the highest standards on the market for purity. You can be assured that we are as concerned about keeping environmental toxins out of our children as you are, and what you see on the label is what you and your children get in your vitamins.

Why does SmartyPants use DHA and EPA from small fish only? Why is that more eco-friendly?

Because smaller fish are lower on the food chain, they bio-accumulate a small fraction of the toxins found in the larger fish used by most vitamin manufacturers. Fish like tuna and salmon can have much higher concentrations of environmental contaminants (PCBs, dioxin, mercury), and we don’t want those things in anyone’s body. Our Fish Oil supplier has a USP certified facility that uses a vacuum filtration process and then third-party lab tested to filter out toxins that are present in the small fish. Also, we wanted to make a vitamin that was as planet friendly as it was kid friendly. Tuna populations are being fast depleted and small fish are considered the eco-friendly way to get your Omega3s. We only use sustainably harvested anchovy & sardine to source our Omega 3 DHA and EPA, and SmartyPants are an excellent source of both of these important essential fatty acid Fish Oils. In addition, a 3:2 ratio of EPA to DHA is highly recommended and it is only available from a fish source.

Small fish are harvested in a sustainable way; ensuring production will not lead to extinctions or the collapse of ecosystems. Large fish harvesting (tuna, salmon) are now threatening some species with extinction, and we want our company to be as planet friendly as it can be. SmartyPants is an excellent source of Omega 3s without adding to the serious problem of overfishing in our oceans. That way you can feel good about every gummy you and your children eat, just like we do.

Does SmartyPants have any environmental toxins like mercury, lead, PCBs, or dioxin?

Both our DHA and EPA are processed without any solvents. Testing for specific metals, such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury and strontium are performed on all our Fish Oil before entering into gummies! Also, each type of finished Fish Oil is tested 3 times per annum for arsenic, lead cadmium, mercury and strontium. All final products meet or exceed the regulatory limits set by California’s Proposition 65. For mercury the Max is 0.01 ppm. To see just how well we both meet and exceed regulatory limits, have a look at the chart below.

Our Multi-Vitamin Formula

What form of Vitamin B-12 do you use and why does it matter?

Vitamin B-12 is available commercially in two forms: Cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin.  It turns out there’s a big difference between the two, because methylcobalamin is the type of B vitamin used by your brain and nerves.  Cyanocobalamin contains a bond with cyanide (a poison) that must be detoxified before it provides any health benefits.

Why does SmartyPants contain such a large dosage of Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is poorly absorbed by the human body due to the large size of the vitamin molecule and the necessity of bonding with intrinsic factor found in the stomach (studies show that intrinsic factor is deficient in many people for a variety of reasons).  For this reason, only a fraction of the B12 on our label is actually absorbed through the intestines, making the larger dosage necessary to receive any benefit at all. This is why you see higher levels of B12 in many high quality multivitamins and stand alone B12 supplements.  B12 is a water soluble vitamin, so your body is able to excrete whatever excess is not used — which addresses any concerns about reaching the upper toxicity limit of Vitamin B12. Additionally, B12 is primarily sourced from meats, which physicians are encouraging us to eat less of.

What is the source of lactic acid in this product?

The lactic acid in all of our products comes from sucrose.

What is the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A?

Vitamin A deficiency diminishes your body’s ability to fight infections, so it’s critical to get enough of this vitamin to maintain a vibrant immune system.  However, since Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin, it can potentially build up in the body to toxic levels.  For this reason we decided to include enough Vitamin A to enhance a well-balanced diet, not replace a healthy diet.  Our DV for Vitamin A for children 3 years old is 44%, and for children 4 and over is 22%, so you never have to worry about Vitamin A toxicity with SmartyPants as long as you and your child are eating a balanced diet and following our dosing recommendation.

Are there overdose risks?

With any oil-based vitamin, like Vitamins A, D, E and K, there is a risk of getting too much of a good thing.  With Vitamin D, we supply 100% of the RDI but many health care professionals are comfortable recommending Vitamin D at doses 5 and even 10 times what SmartyPants provides as this nutrient is not naturally occurring in foods. Vitamin A toxicity levels are thought to occur at around 100,000 IU a day and SmartyPants provides a tiny fraction of that.  Vitamin E toxicity levels are not well established but are thought to occur around 1000 mg/day and again SmartyPants provides just a tiny fraction of that.  It is virtually impossible to overdose on vitamins from food intake, and always following our recommended doses will address any risk of overdose, even with long-term vitamin use.

Why doesn’t SmartyPants contain iron?

Unfortunately, because Iron oxidizes Fish Oil, we couldn’t include both in one product. We focus on the nutrients toughest to get from foods safely in the amounts our body needs. Because we need 2-3 servings of fish a week to get the Omega 3 DHA and EPA that our bodies need, most of us don’t get enough. The taste, environmental concerns (overfished tuna, farmed salmon), and doctors’ instructions to limit our fish intake to no more than once a week due to mercury risks (even higher for kids) all conspire to make it extremely difficult to get enough Omega 3s from fish. Vegetarian forms of Omega 3s frequently lack EPA (just as critical as DHA to your health). So while Iron can be tricky for some, it is readily available in dark leafy greens. Additionally, iron is the leading cause of supplemental overdose, and we didn’t feel good about providing a product that tasted great and yet could be harmful if someone decided to eat a whole bottle in one sitting (be they kids or adults). We take safety very seriously, as we made this product with our own children in mind.

However, iron is a crucial nutrient for health, and, if iron is recommended by your healthcare professional, we suggest you use a standalone liquid product for iron supplementation. Please let us know if you need a recommendation for an Iron supplement.

Why don’t SmartyPants vitamins contain calcium?

We focus on the “all-in-one” vitamins with particular attention to nutrients tougher to get (safely) from food in the right amounts (like D and Omega3’s). Since the last thing the world really needs is another vitamin company, we wanted to make sure we were solving a real problem.

Many reputable health experts recommend Calcium be obtained through diet rather than supplements.  They make this recommendation for various reasons (you can read about them here), but one of them is that your body has a hard time absorbing calcium when it is combined with zinc. Because zinc is difficult to get through diet alone and is so important (especially for children) in helping prevent stunted growth, slow wound healing, in boosting the immune system, and more – and because calcium is so widely available in a plethora of foods, we chose to include zinc over calcium. Also, many recent articles recommend not taking Calcium in supplement form (you can read more about that here).

Why don’t SmartyPants contain Selenium?

Most Americans consume adequate amounts of selenium. According to an analysis of data from the 2009–2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the average daily selenium intake in Americans aged 2 years and older from foods is 108.5 mcg, and the Recommended Daily Allowance is only 20-40 mcg for kids (and 55 mcg for adults).  As you can see, most Americans are getting plenty of selenium from their diets, and so we did not include it in SmartyPants.

Is there Lead in SmartyPants?

Lead is a naturally occurring mineral found in the water, soil, and air, as well as in many everyday foods and botanicals, and you and your children come into contact with lead every day simply by breathing.  Any naturally occurring lead in our product is part of the food matrix contained in our botanical materials. In short, it is not possible to entirely avoid lead in the modern world.  However, we are committed to rigorously third-party testing every batch for not just lead, but for all contaminants, and SmartyPants is at all times well within compliance with Prop 65.  We feel great about giving SmartyPants to our own children and taking it ourselves.

Our Other Ingredients

Why does SmartyPants use organic sugar?

We prefer to avoid having any genetically modified ingredients in our diet whenever possible (ie no corn syrup, glucose syrup from corn, high fructose corn syrup from GM crops).  We especially don’t want to ingest synthetic artificial sweeteners (sucralose, aspartame).  And with the recent FDA approval of genetically modified sugar beets, we would prefer to be totally safe and use an organic sugar source, to keep all possible GM ingredients out of our own children’s vitamin.  The GM corn and soy industries refuse to conduct ANY long-term safety studies on their crops, and as long as these studies remain a question mark we prefer to avoid any possible health damage that GM crops might cause to our children or yours.

What is the difference between sugar and high fructose corn syrup?

High fructose corn syrup is a man-made sweetener that has been linked to many health issues, including the obesity crisis currently afflicting the US due to its hight fructose to sucrose ratio.  Corn syrup is also a genetically modified ingredient, since the vast majority of corn grown in the US is now GM.  With GM organisms now approved by the FDA for sugar beets, we decided to include only organically derived cane sugar for SmartyPants, ensuring you will never find a GM organism in SmartyPants.

Why does SmartyPants use sugar instead of stevia or artificial sweeteners?

Artificial sweeteners have been linked to numerous health issues for many years and we prefer not to include this ingredient because we don’t to ingest artificial sweeteners.  Sugar does allow the vitamins to be taken at any time.  The amount of organic sugar included in one serving of SmartyPants is just over one teaspoon – that’s about 80% less than a glass of unsweetened apple juice.

SmartyPants look like candy; do they contain a lot of sugar?

The 5 grams of sugar in our kids serving size and 7.5 grams in an adult serving (the FTC won’t allow us to use .5 so they force us to round up) is just slightly more than a teaspoon (two teaspoons in an adult serving) – that’s 80% less sugar and a glass of unsweetened apple juice. With the average American now thought to be consuming more than 150 grams of sugar a day (almost 40 teaspoons!), we believe that SmartyPants sugar content vs. nutrient load is a healthy solution. We use the minimum amount of sugar possible to address taste — if the vitamins don’t taste good, they aren’t taken consistently. Also, we always use only organic sweeteners and NEVER use genetically modified options (corn syrup, glucose syrup, high fructose corn syrup from GM crops), or synthetic and artificial options (sucralose, aspartame) that we found on the ingredient lists of most other gummy vitamins on the market.

Is this product safe to take for children with allergies?

Any children with known fish allergies should consult with a qualified healthcare professional before taking our product as our product does contain Omega 3 powder derived from small fish (though SmartyPants does not contain the more allergenic fish protein).  The vitamins and minerals in our product are not known to be allergenic.  SmartyPants is free of yeast, wheat, milk, eggs, gluten, salt, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and salicylates and are produced in a certified allergen-free facility.

Are SmartyPants gluten-free? wheat free? dairy free?

Yes, we are always free of gluten, wheat and dairy.  All of our products contain no yeast, wheat, milk, eggs, gluten, salt, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or salicylates.

Are your vitamins vegetarian?

Because your body has an easier time utilizing the Omega 3s from Fish Oil (DHA and EPA) than it does using Omega 3s from vegetable sources which must be converted from their natural state into a form your body uses (ALA from flaxseed, walnuts, etc), we chose to put the more effective Omega 3 from fish oil in our vitamin.  However, we realize some people eat according to vegetarian and vegan principles and would prefer to avoid any animal products in their diet, so we are currently developing a vegetarian vitamin option that we hope to introduce in 2013. If you’re interested in a vegetarian version of SmartyPants, you can sign up here to be alerted when we launch the product.

Our Vitamin D

Why do use D3 when others use D2?

D3 (the one provided by sunshine) is the form of Vitamin D that is preferred by the human body and the one most recommended by health professionals.  We also chose a vitamin D sourced from lanolin instead of fish oil to further avoid additional contamination. Please see our comprehensive research article on Vitamin D for further information.

General

Why did you start the company?

SmartyPants offers the only All-in-One Gummy Vitamin for kids and adults that combines eco-friendly omega 3 DHA & EPA  + a multivitamin + vitamin D3 + B12 in one serving. We started this company because its just become too hard to be healthy. We know what its like to stand bewildered in front of a wall of vitamins and wonder, What Now? So we decided to combine those well researched and supported nutrients that are toughest to get safely from food into one serving that tasted so good, you wouldn’t have to worry about remembering to take them every day. With a focus on extremely high quality, bio available and organic ingredients, we created the first all in one gummy vitamin. By making things easier, we hope to put health in the reach of more people every day.  And because we think everyone deserves a great start in life, we provide a 1 for 1 matching nutrient grant to a child in need with every bottle we sell through our partnership with Vitamin Angels.

Where are SmartyPants made?

SmartyPants are manufactured in a GMP certified facility in California, and are compliant with strict Proposition 65 guidelines.

What does GMP Certified mean?

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is a series of quality control guidelines designed to ensure products are produced in a manner that safeguards the health of the consumer.  This certification is issued by the FDA. We use only GMP certified labs for the production of SmartyPants, which means you can trust our vitamins have been produced to the highest standards on the market.  Our fish oil supplier’s laboratory is also USP certified, a quality control certificate that is considered the gold standard in the supplement industry.

Why isn’t your product certified organic?

At this time Fish Oil is not able to be certified organic, so we can’t claim to be entirely organic on our label because our all-in-one vitamin includes an excellent source Omega 3s sourced from anchovy and sardine. We don’t meet the percentage requirement (90% of volume) to claim the product is certified organic — although we can claim that our ingredients are organic as we use exclusively organic cane sugar, organic tapioca, organic black carrot juice, and organic turmeric.

What is Vitamin Angels and how does my purchase of SmartyPants help?

Vitamin Angels’ mission is to mobilize and deploy private sector resources to advance availability, access and use of micronutrients, especially Vitamin A, by newborns, infants and children in need. Vitamin Angels reduces child mortality worldwide by connecting essential nutrients, especially Vitamin A, with infants and children under five. Essential nutrients enable young immune systems to fight infectious diseases, helping children attain good health and the opportunity to lead meaningful and productive lives.  SmartyPants is proud to donate a one-for-one nutrient grant to Vitamin Angels for every bottle we sell.

Does SmartyPants help with ADD and ADHD?

The synthetic dyes and colors found in many products (especially vitamins) marketed to children have been positively linked to ADD and ADHD for many years through independent research, and these ingredients have been banned in children’s products in the UK.  But despite the growing scholarly research into the connection between these ingredients and these afflictions, the US FDA has yet to act.  Recently, however, the FDA announced it was taking a closer look at the connection between synthetic dyes and children’s health.  We prefer not to take any chances and are not waiting for the FDA to act — we left these controversial ingredients out of our product, so if your child suffers from ADD or ADHD, switching to SmartyPants may help address issues caused by another product that contains these artificial ingredients.

What is the difference between fat soluble and water soluble vitamins?

Fat soluble vitamins (Vitamins A, D, E and K) store in your body’s fat cells and can accumulate to toxic levels that can be detrimental to good health.  This is why it’s critically important to get only what your body needs from a supplement when it comes to these vitamins.  With SmartyPants you never have to worry about getting too much of a good thing, because our vitamins taken in the recommended dosage have been designed to enhance a well balanced diet, not replace it.  Water soluble vitamins, on the other hand, are able to pass through your body unused if they are not needed, so you don’t have to worry about an overdose of water soluble vitamins.

Why did SmartyPants change the amount the Vitamin D in its products?

This product, like our new and improved SmartyPants Original, contains 900 IUs of vitamin D3 per serving.  The FDA recently upped their standards for 100%, but even their higher requirements did match the recommendations of top experts in the field of nutrition.  To help our customers reach optimal levels of Vitamin D, we raised the amount in our Original gummies and our Weight Management gummies to 225% of the RDI of Vitamin D.  We realize how important this nutrient is and have made ensuring you get enough of it one of our top priorities.

Why did you pick the nutrients found in SmartyPants?

Please see our informative research articles covering all the separate vitamins and minerals included in SmartyPants.  We believe we have included the perfect combination of vitamins, minerals and healthy oils that your body needs to thrive.  Our whole family takes SmartyPants ourselves, so we stand behind every bottle we sell with the guarantee that it meets our own personal (high) standards.

Do you know what’s in your child’s vitamin?

Here at SmartyPants a lot of thought has gone into what ingredients belong in the vitamins we feed to children.  More and more we heard that Omega 3 and Vitamin D might be key nutrients all our children, despite our best efforts, were deficient in.  In fact, the main reason we started our company was because we were not satisfied with the choices we all faced as parents, entrepreneurs and healthcare practitioners trying to find a suitable children’s supplement.

So we’ve compiled what we think are the Top 6 questions worth asking when choosing a supplement for your child:

Are SmartyPants Adult Complete vitamins good for pregnancy?

While our Adult gummies are good for those who are pregnant, they are not pre-natal vitamins.  We are actually in the process of developing a pre-natal gummy now.  Our current Adult gummies contain 100% of the RDI for Folic Acid but that’s only half of what you need if you are pregnant. We decided to not include too much vitamin A (also an important ingredient for a pre-natal)  because A is a fat-soluble vitamin which can be toxic at high levels.

Because we were focused on nutrients toughest to get from foods, we had to make some tough choices. One of those was iron vs. fish oil (as iron oxidizes oil). Because getting enough Omega 3s from a clean source is a tougher and wider problem, we decided to include that instead of iron. As you well know, Iron is a key supplement for pre-natal brain development. We do know some midwives who give our product and suggest their patients additionally take an Iron supplement (we recommend Ferrochel Iron, as it’s the most bioavailable form, and to take it via a dropper so its easy to take) and a Folic Acid supplement. That will keep your pill swallowing to a minimum and still get you Omegas and other vital nutrients in a more palatable and therefore sustainable form.

I am concerned about the radiation leakage from Fukushima. How do I know your fish oil is safe?

The Peruvian anchovy fishery our fish oil is sourced from is at very low risk of contamination from the aftermath of the Japanese tsunami. Prevailing ocean currents act to deliver clean water from the southern Pacific and Southern Ocean. In addition, the anchovy remain off the west coast of South America from birth to catch and do not migrate throughout the Pacific where they could encounter water contaminated with the fall-out from Fukushima.

SmartyPants seems expensive compared to other gummy vitamin products. Why?

SmartyPants fills a hole on shelf as the Premium Gummy on the market. Where adults might not normally purchase a gummy because they are quality focused, SmartyPants fills that gap with a focus on quality, bio-available, and eco-friendly ingredients. By combining 4-5 products into one, our gummies, though more expensive than a typical multi, address the main pain point for most consumers: convenience. Our better than average retention rate on Amazon is evidence that people pay a premium for quality and convenience. No more half-used bottles.

Does my child or I really need a multivitamin?

Vitamins are not a magic bullet, but they are helpful to fill in the gaps when you or your child is not always able to eat a balanced meal.  We view our SmartyPants gummies as an insurance policy that ensures our bodies are not going to be deficient in the nutrients they need to thrive. We always recommend checking with your healthcare professional before giving your child or taking yourself any supplements to make sure any specific deficiencies are being addressed. We encourage you to print our label and share it with your healthcare professional and see how we measure up against other vitamins available on the market.  You can also sign up for a free trial sample before you purchase a bottle, to see how you or your kids like the taste of our gummies.

Do I need to take SmartyPants with food?

No. Because of the way the organic cane sugar helps your body to digest the vitamins you can take your gummies any time of the day with or without food. We at SmartyPants like to take ours in the afternoon as the b-12 can give you a little boost of energy, but you may find dividing them into two servings as a healthy treat helpful. We also just like them as a little snack!

How can I make it easier to remember to take or give my kids their vitamins?

We understand that remembering to take your vitamins or making sure your kids get them is always a challenge, and we want to make that challenge a little smaller. That is why we made a delicious gummy that is great tasting and effective any time of the day with or without food. Also, we make an On-The-Go Pack which is easy to throw in a bag (or a lunch box!) to ensure you have your gummies while travelling or during or anytime throughout busy days.

Do you offer a 100% Money-back Guarantee?

How should I take my gummies? Top ways to enjoy SmartyPants.

We have heard all sorts of ways that people like to eat SmartyPants. To maximize the nutrient impact we recommended eating them twice a day after dinner and/or lunch or in the afternoon to help stave off dips in energy (thanks to the B12). And in our Willy Wonka quest to maximize flavor (and keep you taking your vitamins) we learned chilling SP in the fridge does wonders to bring out the lemon, orange and strawberry-banana flavor. Try it!

Our Fiber Products

Is this product the same as SmartyPants Original? What’s different?

Our original SmartyPants uses only the best, natural and organic ingredients we can find. Our latest products must meet these same high standards. We kept the best things like our high quality fish oil, our natural vitamin E, high, premium B-12 content and multivitamin formula. However, to create a high fiber gummy with no added sugar that still tasted great and yet contained no artificial sweeteners, we had to create a new formula from scratch.  Ultimately, we found the perfect base for our new gummy in the form of Chicory root. Inulin, derived from chicory root, gave us the great fiber content we were looking for, along with a natural sweetness and delicious flavor all in one.

Is the product going to taste as good or the same as SmartyPants Original?

We think SmartyPants Premium Weight Management gummies are absolutely delicious and are reminiscent of the Dots you used to find in movie theaters (but with lots of great nutrients and none of the artificial junk). While the sweetness is not as intense as SmartyPants Original, you will still recognize the great taste you have come to expect from us, with no fishy aftertaste.

Why didn’t you make the product Sugar Free?

Many competing Weight Management products claim to be Sugar Free.  To be completely free of sugar and maintain a palatable taste, these companies usually fill their product with artificial sweeteners like xilytol, polydextrose, sucralose, and sugar alcohols, all of which carry with them questionable — or negative — health consequences.  These artificial sweeteners do not match the rigorous nutritional standards we at SmartyPants require of the ingredients in our gummies.  What little sugar there is in our weight management product comes from our soluble fiber source, chicory root extract, and the lo han fruit — all healthy, natural sources of sugar.

I or my child already take SmartyPants. Would I replace it with Kids Fiber Complete or Weight Management?

Both SmartyPants Premium Weight Management and our Kids Fiber Complete consists of not only a fiber supplement with no added sugar but also an All-in-One vitamin with Vitamin D3, EPA and DHA Fish Oil and a full multivitamin. If you take our Weight Management product, there would be no need to take SmartyPants Original gummies.  It would act as a complete substitute for your SmartyPants original, as you will still be getting all the same nutrients, plus fiber!

Does the “no sugar added” gummy still contain Vitamin D, Fish Oil, and a multivitamin?

Yes! Not only does does our Weight Management gummy contain all the great things from SmartyPants original, but it also contains fiber and no added sugar.

Does the “no sugar added” mean no sugar?

Our chicory root base contains a naturally occurring sugar in the low amount of 3g for Adults. We do not believe in using any sugar substitutes such as agave syrup, stevia, or xylitol, which may all have deleterious effects on health.

Why is fiber important?

According to the American Heart Association, a diet high in fiber has been associated with higher diet quality and lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Among it’s many benefits, soluble fiber reduces bad cholesterol (LDL), while having no negative impact on good cholesterol (HDL).  It promotes regularity and increases the presence of beneficial bacteria in the gut.  Soluble fiber also creates a sense of fullness, allowing you to feel satisfied on less food.  Sadly, one of the biggest deficiencies in our diet is fiber. While the FDA recommends adults take 20-38 grams of fiber per day (depending on age and gender) most of us consume around half of that.  That is why we included soluble fiber in our SmartyPants Weight Management — to help close this nutrition gap and to help bring these many benefits to our customers.

Should I ease into taking fiber?

If you don’t have a lot of fiber in your diet already, we recommend starting off with 3 gummies daily for the first week and then 6 gummies daily thereafter.  For our Kids Fiber gummies, 2 gummies for the first week and then 4 gummies daily thereafter.

Where does your fiber come from?

To make our Weight Management product with no added sugar live up to our high standards, we needed to formulate the gummies from scratch.  At the end of our search for the best possible ingredients, we found chicory root for the base of our new gummies. Chicory root naturally contains inulin, a form of soluble fiber.  Amongst inulin’s many beneficial properties, this soluble fiber increases calcium absorption, while promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria.  And though inulin has a sweetness to it, inulin has minimal increasing impact on blood sugar.  For this reason, it is considered suitable for diabetics.

What is chicory root?

Chicory is a somewhat woody plant usually with bright blue flowers. The leaves are used for salads and the roots can be used as a coffee substitute or ground as an herb. These roots are also used to make medicines. Chicory root has a long history of providing support to liver problems. Ancient Romans used the herb to help cleanse the blood. The root of the chicory plant contains inulin, which acts as a source of dietary fiber and helps your body absorb minerals from digested food products. Inulin also promotes the growth of naturally occurring bacteria in your digestive system and helps keep it functioning normally.

What is inulin?

Inulin is carbohydrate found mostly in root vegetables.  We derive our inulin from chicory root.  Because inulin is not absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, it is considered a fiber.

What is the difference between soluble fiber and Bulk (or Insoluble) Fiber?

There are two different types of fiber: soluble and insoluble, or “bulk” fiber.  Soluble fiber (the kind found in SmartyPants Weight Management and Kids Fiber Complete) dissolves in water and transforms into a gel during digestion.  This gel expands in your system, giving you the experience of feeling more satisfied on less food.  Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, cannot be dissolved in the water in your body, and must be taken with water.  Once ingested, bulk fiber absorbs water, allowing it to move quickly through your system.  This can cause a loosening of the stool, promoting bowel movements.  Soluble fiber, while also benefitting regularity, does not need to be taken with water.  We wanted taking your weight management product to be simple and purely beneficial, so we chose soluble fiber.

Do I need to refrigerate my fiber gummies?

Because our Weight Management gummies lack a sugar coating, they are more prone to becoming sticky in warmer environments.  That is why we recommend keeping them in the refrigerator to prevent them from sticking to teeth and to each other.

I am Fructose Intolerant – will I be able to take SmartyPants’ Fiber products?

Fructose Intolerance (also referred to as Fructose Malabsorption) is a condition that affects a significant portion of the population.  Typically, we all have the ability to absorb anywhere from 5 to 50 grams of fructose at a single eating. Anything that we cannot absorb ferments in the gut causing symptoms like abdominal pain, gas, and bloating.

If you are one of the folks whose limit is 5 grams, you probably would be considered “fructose intolerant”; if, on the other hand, you are able to absorb 25-50 grams, you’ve probably never heard of the term.

Inulin, the fiber component of SmartyPants, is roughly 80-90% fructose, with only a few percent of that present as “free” fructose (Fructose exists in foods either as a free monosaccharide or bound to glucose as sucrose) – not enough free fructose to cause fructose intolerance problems. On the other hand, inulin is a prebiotic which means it can feed gut organisms, sometimes resulting in bloating, gas and general discomfort – similar symptoms to Fructose Intolerance. This discomfort is, however, different than Fructose Intolerance because usually this discomfort will abate as your “good” gut bacteria get used to eating inulin, and they swamp out the bad gas-bloating-discomfort-causing bacteria.  This abatement period is why we recommend gradually increasing the dosage over a period of a few weeks (beginning with 2 gummies/week for kids, and beginning with 3/gummies per week for adults).

Even those who are fructose intolerant are usually able to handle a few grams of inulin each day.

If you believe you may be Fructose Intolerant, we recommend checking with your healthcare professional to see if SmartyPants is right for you.
