How Much Lutein and Zeaxanthin Should I Get Per Day? What Foods Are They Found In?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

Here’s a riddle for you. What are three words that strike fear into any meat lover’s heart?

The answer: Eat your greens.

Well, turns out that tried and true platitude your parents told you at every meal is right – at least when it comes to lutein and zeaxanthin.

While there is no recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for either of these critical nutrients yet, most recent clinical studies show health benefits at 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin per day for adults 18+. Additional studies suggest a daily intake of 6 mg lutein and 1 mg zeaxanthin for children 2 – 18.*

Average lutein and zeaxanthin consumption across the world.†

Most Americans only get 0.8 – 1.1 mg of lutein and zeaxanthin from their diet alone. Here’s a list of the combined amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin in natural foods:

  • Kale (cooked) – 23.8 mg / cup
  • Spinach (cooked) – 20.4 mg / cup
  • Collard Greens (cooked) – 14.6 mg / cup
  • Turnip Greens (cooked) – 12.2 mg / cup
  • Broccoli (cooked) – 1.6 mg / cup
  • Green Beans (cooked) – 0.8 mg / cup
  • Eggs – 0.3 mg / 2 large eggs

What’s Your Lutein Level?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

The measure of the amount of lutein and zeaxanthin in your eyes is called macular pigment optical density, or MPOD. Low MPOD means less protection from excess blue light.

Talk to your eye care professional about a quick and easy test to measure your MPOD†.

†MPOD devices are fairly new and might not be available everywhere. Ask your eye doctors if MPOD testing is available in your area.

What’s the Big Deal with Lutein and Zeaxanthin? Why are They Important?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

When it comes to lutein and zeaxanthin, two big questions may come to mind: What are they and what do they do?

Long story short: lutein and zeaxanthin are two carotenoids that help support eye health, enhance visual performance, and help protect the eye from overexposure to damaging blue light, often associated with LED screens.*

Now that we have your attention, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of how lutein and zeaxanthin promote healthy vision.

Located near the center of the retina is an area known as the macula.  The pigment in the macula is primarily composed of 3 carotenoids – lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin isomers.

Our bodies cannot synthetize lutein or zeaxanthin, so these carotenoids must be obtained from food or supplements.

Meso-zeaxanthin is created from metabolizing lutein and is not obtainable from dietary sources. In other words, lutein does double duty, acting as a nutrient itself and acting as the raw material for the synthesis of meso-zeaxanthin.

So what about the macular pigment – how is connected to eye health and visual performance?

The thickness and density of the macular pigment is called the macular pigment optical density (MPOD). The thicker and denser the macular pigment, the better your visual acuity, i.e. your ability to see clearly and in fine detail.*

This includes glare recovery, sensitivity to bright lights, contrast sensitivity, and visual processing speed. The macular pigment acts as internal sunglasses for the eyes, absorbing and filtering blue light, the most damaging spectrum of visible light, that is emitted by LED screens on computers, cell phones, tablets, televisions, and etc.*

At 10 mg and 2 mg daily, lutein and zeaxanthin are clinically-proven to increase MPOD.*

Lutein is also able to cross the blood brain barrier and is the predominant carotenoid found in the brain. Strong emerging science suggests that lutein may serve as a safe and natural support for cognitive function, especially as you age. Lutein is also an important nutrient for brain development and may provide antioxidant protection for the brain.*

With 60% of Americans spending more than 5 hours a day on digital devices, it has become increasingly important to get lutein and zeaxanthin in your daily diet.

That’s why we include FloraGLO Lutein and OPTISHARP Natural Zeaxanthin in our Masters Complete and Teen Complete products – and we hope to add it to many more of our formulas in the future.

SmartyPants Masters Complete is the only gummy vitamin with clinically-proven doses of lutein and zeaxanthin.

Our Teen Complete product contain 6 mg and 1 mg of lutein and zeaxanthin respectively for a safe and efficacious dose for those under 18 years of age.

At SmartyPants, we know ingredients matter – that’s why we use the best of the best whenever possible. We chose to use FloraGLO Lutein because it is the most clinically researched lutein brand worldwide and was the chosen lutein brand used by the National Eye Institute (NEI) in the landmark AREDS2 study.

We know we have to earn your trust, so that’s why we work hard to create the best possible product we can. If you have any questions regarding lutein or zeaxanthin, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Your Certificate of Compliance Shows That There Are Heavy Metals In Your Products. Should I Be Concerned?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

Heavy metals such as lead are naturally occurring minerals found in the water, soil, air, and foods we come into contact with every day.

The fact is, it’s impossible to eliminate all traces of heavy metals in our products.

Any naturally occurring heavy metals in our products are part of the food matrix contained in the premium ingredients we use to craft each and every one of our supplements. That being said, we created SmartyPants for our very own children. We give them to our families, friends, and take them ourselves, so you can be sure we hold each and every one of our products to the most rigorous safety standards.

We are proud to say that all SmartyPants products meet or fall well below the legal limits of California’s Prop. 65 – the strictest standard, worldwide, for environmental toxins.

As shown in the example below, “Specification” denotes the maximum allowable dose levels (MADLs) for each heavy metal under California’s Prop. 65 while “Results” shows how much of each heavy metal was detected in our product.

The limits set by California’s Proposition 65 are significantly lower than the limits set by the FDA and USP. The FDA’s upper limit for lead, for example, is 150 times greater than the upper limit for lead set by California’s Prop. 65. All SmartyPants products meet or fall well below California’s strict limits for environmental toxins and heavy metals.

At SmartyPants, one of our core principles is transparency, so we’ve adjusted our Certificates of Compliance to make our communications more informative and more helpful.

Why Do You Include Only 2 Species of Probiotics?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

The research on probiotics is new and constantly evolving, but we do know that different species of probiotics perform many different functions. We specifically chose to include Bacillus subtilis  and Bacillus coagulans in our Probiotic Complete products because they are backed extensively by research and are proven to deliver optimal digestive and immune health benefits.*

In addition to their numerous individual health benefits, B. subtilis and B. coagulans have also been clinically proven to promote the colonization of other, different kinds of probiotic bacteria in your gut.

Our probiotics help promote the growth of other probiotics.

For example, studies have shown that the presence of Bacillus bacteria promotes the growth and colonization of Lactobacillus acidophilus, one of the most common bacteria in our gut that helps us digest lactose.

THAT BEING SAID, THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT…

While we’re SUPER proud of our new products, we’ll be the first to admit they’re not perfect – there is no such thing. There is no magic strain, combination of strains, or number of CFUs that can do it all. At least that we know of.

We created our probiotics based on the most established and time-tested research, but, as with all SmartyPants products, these gummies are meant to compliment a healthy diet – not replace it. We recommend that you consume a wide variety of beneficial bacteria from both our gummies, as well as from probiotic foods, which contain a multitude of different species depending on the food and where it’s made (you can read more about those here.) And, rest assured, if we discover a better way to approach nutrition and health, you’ll be the first to know, and we’ll do our best to reflect that science in our products.

Your Probiotics Include Soil-Based Organisms (SBOs). How Do I Know They’re Safe and Effective?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

We created SmartyPants with our own children in mind. We give our products to our families, friends, and take them ourselves, so safety and quality are our highest priorities. With every product we make we are committed to using the most well-researched, time-tested ingredients possible.

We specifically chose to include Bacillus subtilis  and Bacillus coagulans in our Probiotic Complete products because they are backed extensively by research and are proven to deliver optimal digestive and immune health benefits.* While these two strains of beneficial probiotic bacteria are not native to the human body, they are found widely in the environment, from the raw fruits and vegetables you eat to the water from your tap.

Additionally, research shows that Bacillus bacteria have actually evolved to be able to live and thrive in the mammalian body, suggesting that they are a well-established and safe component of the human diet.

B. coagulans is one of the most clinically studied Bacillus bacteria out there, and is known to support general GI and vaginal health, promote healthy cholesterol levels, and decrease occasional abdominal discomfort.*

In addition to their individual benefits, both B. subtilis and B. coagulans have been clinically proven to promote the colonization of other, different probiotic bacteria to your gut, including Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is one of the most common bacteria in our gut that helps us digest lactose.

By helping other kinds of good bacteria grow, the two species of beneficial bacteria in SmartyPants Probiotic Complete help diversify and strengthen your microbiome.

And don’t worry, the “soil-based” probiotics in our products aren’t actually from the dirt. They are produced in a safe, monitored environment which ensures the specificity of the species and strains.

In terms of efficacy, Bacillus bacteria naturally form spores or protective shells. This outer shell protects the bacteria from many of the environmental factors which typically kill other kinds of probiotic bacteria such as UV light, temperature, and stomach acids.

99% of the probiotic bacteria we use in SmartyPants will reach the large intestine alive, where they can flourish, multiply, and help you thrive.*

What is a PRO-biotic? What is a PRE-biotic?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

SmartyPants Probiotic Complete includes PRE-biotics and PRO-biotics.

PRO-biotics are live microorganisms, mainly bacteria, that are good for your health. They’re typically found in fermented foods like sauerkraut and kombucha.

PRE-biotics are indigestible plant and fungi fibers that act as an ideal food for PRO-biotics.

In other words, PRE-biotics FEED PRO-biotics, helping them to grow, multiply, and thrive.

How Can Your Products Be Free of Fish Allergens if They Include Fish Oil?

We get it. It’s confusing. Our products are allergen free. However, some of our products contain fish oil. Our fish oil is highly refined, a process that removes proteins that cause allergic reactions. Due to this removal process, highly-refined oils are exempt from FDA’s required allergen cautions. Additionally, our fish oil is third-party certified by The International Fish Oil Standards™ (IFOS™) Program which is the only third-party testing and certification program for fish oils. IFOS sets the world’s highest standards for purity, potency and freshness. We always encourage checking with your doctor before starting any supplement regimen to see if it’s right for you.

All SmartyPants products are free of tree nut allergens.

Some of our products, however, are coated with medium chain triglycerides derived from coconut oil. The coconut oil we use is highly refined and fractionated. According to the FDA, consuming highly refined oils derived from major food allergens by allergic individuals does not appear to be associated with allergic reactions.

Although this coconut oil base is considered non-allergenic, we recommend you consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you have a known tree nut allergy to determine if our products are right for you.

Why Don’t You Include Magnesium in Your Vitamin Supplements?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

Our vitamin formulas do not contain magnesium because this nutrient helps relax the body (and can even help support healthy sleep), and many of the nutrients in our daily vitamin formulas, specifically the B vitamins, support energy production and are energizing. We felt it would be counterproductive to take them together.

That being said, magnesium is a critical nutrient needed for over 500 enzymatic reactions in the body, and many people are low in magnesium due to the poor nutrient quality of our soils. We recommend focusing on eating lots of magnesium-rich foods, such as dark, leafy greens, sprouted pumpkin seeds, mackerel, and avocados. If you’re unable to get adequate magnesium from dietary sources, we recommend working with your primary healthcare provider to determine the right supplement for you.

Why Does Your Fish Oil Come from Small Fish Only? How Is That More Eco-friendly?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

At SmartyPants, we want to make vitamins that are as planet friendly as they are kid friendly. Unsustainable fishing is one of the biggest environmental issues of our time. Tuna, salmon, and other large fish are being fast depleted in the wild, causing widespread ecosystem disruptions and fishery collapse. Unlike many other vitamin companies, our MEG-3â fish oil is sourced from sustainable stocks of wild-caught small fish only.

Small fish such as anchovies, sardines, herring, and mackerel are considered the environmentally responsible way to get your omega 3s. Our fish oil is source from multiple populations all over the world to prevent overfishing of any one population and to minimize our environmental impact. By rotating fisheries, we give ecosystems time to recover.

Even better? Because wild-caught small fish are lower on the food chain, have a shorter life span, and swim in the open ocean, they accumulate less contaminants and toxins like mercury, PCBs, and dioxins.

Omega 3s that are good to the environment and good for you? Heck. Yes.

Why Do You Use Sugar?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

We use organic cane sugar, along with other natural sweeteners, to create a gummies and chews so delicious, you and your kids will want to take your vitamins every day. Because the simple fact is that if vitamins don’t taste good, people don’t take them. Long story short – the most expensive vitamins are the ones that end up in the trash.

Not all sources of sugar are equal, however. Some sources, such as whole fruits, come with additional nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber. With every source of sugar, you have to consider what you’re getting along with that sugar. All SmartyPants vitamins deliver at least 13 essential nutrients and omega 3 fish oil, and some of our products come with additional goodies, such as prebiotic fiber in our Fiber formulas, CoQ10 in our Men’s, Women’s, and Masters formulas, and lutein and zeaxanthin in our Teen and Masters formulas.

At SmartyPants, we are always mindful of the amount of sugar in our products and are always looking for ways to lower the sugar content without affecting the taste or stability of our gummies. That being said, we will only include a new sweetener in our products if it presents a meaningful, evidenced-based nutritional advantage.

How Did You Pick Which Nutrients to Include in Your Products?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

We carefully craft each of our formulas to match the specific nutritional demands of the product’s target demographic (age, sex, life stage, and etc). This means we thoughtfully tailor which nutrients and in what quantities we include in each and every one of our products based on the FDA’s reference daily intake (RDI), the Institute of Medicine’s recommendations, and the latest science and advice from leading nutritional experts, all with consideration to cost.

SmartyPants is unique in the industry for focusing on the nutrients that are the toughest to get from our diets alone and filling dietary gaps. We always recommend you get nutrients from food first, so we formulate our products to complement the average American diet, not replace it.

Fat Soluble vs Water Soluble Vitamins…What’s the Difference?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

Water soluble vitamins, such as your B vitamins, are not stored in your body’s fat cells and any excess is excreted from the body. Conversely, fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E and K, are stored in your body’s fat cells and can accumulate over time if your body does not metabolize those vitamins. Excess fat soluble vitamins can accumulate to detrimental levels if we consume too much over a prolonged period of time. This is why leading nutritional experts caution consumers to check the supplement facts of their multivitamins to see how much of each vitamin they’re are ingesting daily. With SmartyPants multivitamins, you never have to worry about getting too much of a good thing because each serving of our vitamins is carefully designed with the average American diet in mind. We focus on the nutrients hardest for some to get from diet alone and filling dietary gaps. Our products are meant to complement a healthy diet, not replace it.

Where Do Your Ingredients Come From?

All SmartyPants ingredients are FDA approved, and our manufacturing process is regularly audited by the FDA to ensure they adhere to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines. These strict quality control guidelines safeguard the health of the consumer and assure the purity and potency of the product and its ingredients. This means you can trust that our vitamins have been produced to the highest quality standards on the market.

What’s the Difference Between Cyanocobalamin and Methylcobalamin? Which is the Better Form of B12?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

When it comes to the premium nutrients in our vitamins, we insist on the best of the best. Our vitamin B12 is a prime example of that promise.

Vitamin B12 comes in two commercially available forms: cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin, which is B12 attached to a cyanide molecule, is the most common form used in dietary supplements. Methylcobalamin, the form we use in all our vitamin products, is the active form of vitamin B12 that is attached a methyl group.

Which is better? We’ll let you decide for yourself.

The fish oil used in SmartyPants, MEG-3®, is one of the most trusted sources of Omega 3 fish oil available. Meg-3® products are sourced from sustainable stocks of wild-caught small fish. We source our fish oil from wild-caught small fish because they are lower on the food chain and have shorter life spans. As a result, they accumulate less environmental contaminants and toxins like mercury, PCBs, and dioxins than larger fish like tuna and salmon which are used by most vitamin manufacturers. Furthermore, we wanted to make a vitamin that was as planet friendly as it was kid friendly. Tuna and salmon populations are being fast depleted and small fish are considered the eco-friendly way to get your omega 3s.

With SmartyPants, you can feel good about every gummy you and your children eat, just like we do. Our fish oil is produced in a USP-Certified facility, and the final fish oil that goes into SmartyPants undergoes numerous quality checks to make sure it’s safe, pure, and the highest possible quality. Vacuum-sealed bags protect our oil from oxidative degradation, while molecular distillation removes trace amounts of heavy metals, without the use of solvents. All of our products that contain fish oil also comply with the regulatory limits set by the state of California – some of the strictest standards, worldwide, for environmental toxins. Each batch of SmartyPants is third-party lab tested for purity and potency of our products. Additionally, we conduct our own internal test on each batch of our product for environmental contaminants and heavy metals and publish our results here.

Why Are Your B12 Levels Set Where They Are?

Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch. CLOSE Line + Line Copy Created with Sketch.

We love that you’re paying attention to the latest science and are asking the right questions. At SmartyPants, we believe in staying ahead of the game. That’s why we work hard to stay up to date with the latest science and advice from leading nutritional experts.

The amount of vitamin B12 we include in our current formulas is based on the recommendation from some of the best and brightest minds in the field of nutritional science and preventative health. Vitamin B12 is found exclusively in animal products and is an important vitamin that can be difficult for some people to absorb due to a number of biological and lifestyle factors, including a vegan or vegetarian diet, low stomach acid, alcohol consumption, and some medications and medical procedures.

Additionally, B12 is a water soluble vitamin and does not have a Tolerable Upper Limit recommendation

At SmartyPants we choose each and every ingredient that goes into our product carefully. Rather than simply including every nutrient at 100% of the DV, we take a different approach – we focus on the nutrients that seem to be hardest for some to get from diet alone and focus on filling common dietary gaps. We formulate our products to complement the average American diet, not replace it. We consider a number of factors, including how easily the nutrient is absorbed and used by the body, the latest recommendations from the FDA and the Institute of Medicine, and the most current advice from nutritional experts.

With regards to a recent 2017 study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, it has little application to the general public, especially kids. The study population was men aged 50-76 years and all were smokers.  Their cancer risk and nutrient needs are very different than children as well as healthy adults and non-smokers. The results of this study also conflict with the results of previous studies, including a randomized control trial, which is considered the best type of study in the scientific community. Click here to hear a member of our Scientific Advisory Board speak further on this study.

We created SmartyPants with our own children in mind, so you can be sure we take safety and quality very seriously, and we still stand behind our current product.

While we take all research seriously and understand your concern, we believe it’s important to focus on how all of the available scientific research provides a story to shape the recommendations for how much of each nutrient we should eat daily. We look to the research to understand what the average American eats in their diet so we can develop our supplements to fill any gaps. Every year, we revise our formulas to make sure we are in line with the best science for the audience our products are serving.

We always advise that you consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before taking any supplement to determine if it is right for you. Please email [email protected] if you have any further questions or concerns.
