How much do I need?
Current recommended daily intake (RDI) for Vitamin E is 30 IU for adults and children 4 and up, and 10 IU for children ages 3 and younger.
Why we include it
There are eight forms of vitamin E: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta-tocopherols and tocotrienols. While all forms of vitamin E are beneficial, at the current time, there is no non-GMO version of mixed tocopherols, which are typically extracted from soy. Until we can identify a reliable, non-GMO source of mixed tocopherols, we include only d-alpha-tocopherol from sunflower oil. Alpha-tocopherol and its esters are the only forms of Vitamin E recognized by FDA, and the only form that can correct Vitamin E deficiency.
Although vitamin E is abundant in many foods, we include 100% in our SmartyPants products because there is a lot of debate over how much vitamin E is optimal. Some experts recommend amounts up to 1000 IU’s/day. Besides its metabolic functions, Vitamin E helps protect us from our constant exposure to free radicals. We think it’s a good idea to always have 100% of our daily dose of this powerful nutrient.
How can I get it?
All eight forms of vitamin E (alpha, beta, gamma, and delta-tocopherols and tocotrienols) occur naturally in foods, in different amounts:
